EIT Food, a pan-European partnership that focuses on entrepreneurship and innovation in the food sector, launched in 2018 the EIT FAN (Food Accelerator Network) with the purpose of supporting and maximizing the success of start-ups that can have a high impact in the agri-food sector.

The new 2019 call of EIT FAN has just opened, which aims to support 50 European start-ups in 5 different locations: Germany (Munich), Israel (Haifa), Switzerland (Lausanne), the UK (Cambridge), and this year’s novelty, Spain (Bilbao), where at least 10 start-ups will be joining the programme.

One of the differentiating features of EIT FAN is that it is based on a competitive program to facilitate acceleration that goes much further than the exclusive focus on investment. Applicants will go through different selection processes lead by experienced entrepreneurs and food experts.

Those selected will be invited to join one of the 5 acceleration programs, which will last 4 months, where they will have access to tools, experts, knowledge and other resources. The program ends with a final round of selection where the 3 best start-ups will get substantial financial prizes.The eligibility requirements for the EIT FAN include:

  • Applicants must be an early stage agri-food start-up, from anywhere in the world
  • Set to make a big impact on any part of the agriculture or food supply chain
  • Having raised less than €500k in equity-based funding, generated less than €1M in revenue in the last 12 months (although if a start-up has slightly exceeded these guidelines, EIT still recommends applying to the program)
